“Excuse me while I kiss this guy… All the lonely Starbucks lovers… Parrot, parrot, parrot eyes…” There’s a long history of collectively-misheard lyrics. And now we can add “Doobie Scoot Canoe” to the list.
That’s the mishearing of the key refrain from ‘Du Bist Gut Genug’ by German artists Kitschkrieg, Blumengarten and Shirin David.
TikTokers have been having fun with the ‘Doobie Scoot Canoe’ version… to the tune of more than 2.7bn views from nearly 2.2m videos using the track.
That’s a trend that has been jumped on by the likes of BTS’s Jung Kook, Steve Lacy and Lizzo, fuelling the song’s rise to the top of Germany’s official singles chart, as well as the upper reaches of TikTok’s charts in the US and UK.
“We’ve learned that on TikTok, people don’t need to understand every word to fall in love with a song. If it has a great hook, evokes an emotion or inspires creativity, our community will fall in love with it,” said TikTok’s global music programs lead Clive Rozario.
“The fun our community is having around ‘Doobie Scoot Canoe’ has introduced millions of people to a German-language song they might never have discovered otherwise, propelling it up the charts worldwide.”
