A group of four nonprofit organisations in the US has launched a report calling out “the scathing history and financial impact of decades of sexual abuse and coverups in the music industry”.
Lift Our Voices, The Female Composer Safety League, The Representation Project and The Punk Rock Therapist have co-published the ‘Sound Off: Make the Music Industry Safe‘ report.
 It catalogues public information on reported sexual abuse, harassment and related misconduct involving musicians and music industry executives – warning that since many of them have not been tested in a court of law they “should be considered just allegations… all individuals should be considered innocent until proven guilty”.
But the report is also the start of a wider advocacy campaign by the four organisations based around five key demands. First: no more non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) that silence survivors. Second, “mandated policy protocols” for dealing with reported abuse.
The groups want to see a ‘Make the Music Industry Safe’ independent organisation funded by the US MusiCares charity.
They are also calling for publication of the names of artists and executives “credibly accused of sexual assault and harassment”, and the adoption of a ‘Survivor Bill of Rights’ by the industry.
