Benson Boone first pinged up on the industry’s radar in 2021 when he took part in American Idol, but he later withdrew from the competition to focus on his own music. This could have seen him fade into anonymity, but he was picked up by Night Street Records who took him to Warner Records for a joint release. He was thereafter developed outside of the white heat of a TV talent show. Jeff Sosnow (EVP of A&R at Warner and Reprise Records, who signed Benson) and TJ Landig (SVP of marketing at Warner Records) explain how Benson was developed in an age of shifting A&R, why several tracks were issued before he saw real traction, what happened when one song exploded and how the campaign shifted to accommodate it, and where a major ad sync is expected to take his breakthrough song next.
