When Deezer launched its ‘artist-centric’ royalties system in 2023, it only applied to recordings. However, this morning it has announced its next step in applying the model to publishing rights too, in partnership with French collecting society Sacem.
This only applies to France, then, where measures including a user-centric cap; royalty boosts for songs that reach a certain level of monthly streams; and excluding ‘noise’ tracks from the royalties pool will now be applied to publishing rights.
If this pairing sounds familiar, that’s because Deezer and Sacem announced their partnership to “explore the artist-centric monetisation model for publishing rights in streaming” back in October 2023, shortly after the original artist-centric announcement for recordings.
The fact that this exploration lasted for nearly 15 months until today’s news hints at the complexities and sensitivities involved.
