46% of one particular generation listen to CDs, but can you guess which? We may have given it away in the headline…
Yes, according to a new study by manufacturing firm Key Production Group, 46% of Generation Alpha (defined here as 1-16 year-olds) listen to CDs, while 38% listen to vinyl.
This is based on a survey of more than 2,000 people – with parents fielding the questions on behalf of their children. The parents may be having some influence here: Key reported that only 20% prefer their kids to listen to music on a smartphone rather than on physical formats.
However, the study also suggested that 71% of Generation Z people and 75% of millennials are choosing to listen to physical music in order to cut down their screen time, so that may be a trend.
Key Production’s business is mainly in physical music, so the study’s positive conclusions aren’t surprising. However, we think it reflects a real trend.
“For many of these young listeners, physical music offers something digital formats can’t: a sense of authenticity, ownership, and emotional connection,” said CEO Karen Emanuel.
