Indonesia recently became the second country to implement a social media ban policy for children under 16. New data from Australia’s eSafety Commissioner – the first country to initiate a ban three months ago – now reports that 4.7m accounts of children under 16 have since been removed, deactivated and restricted across social media platforms, and 310k of the same demographic have been denied initial access.
It is also important to note, however, that the 4.7m figure references accounts, rather than users. Children are still finding easy workarounds, like using a VPN or creating new accounts with fake ages. 70% of Australian parents report that their children are still able to access the apps.
