Google’s latest search feature is official posts from musicians

The question of what appears in Google search results when people look for their favourite music artists has sparked controversy in the past: rightsholders regularly attacked Google for returning links to illegal downloads.

They’ll be happier about Google’s latest search feature, which has been announced tonight. It’s called ‘search posts’, and will offer social network-style updates from musicians that appear when they are searched for.

“The next time you’re wondering about Lorde’s upcoming tour dates or Steve Aoki’s new music video, you can hear the update directly from them – plus Sia, Son Little, Sofi Tukker, Shakira, and Kygo – through a post in Search,” explained Google’s blog post.

SoundCloud co-founder and CTO Eric Wahlforss – aka Forss in his musician guise – is whizzing Music Ally through his feed of tracks from friends and fellow artists on his company’s revamped iPhone app, which launches today. I’ve never heard of witch-hop, mermaid or churchstep, but Wahlforss, thankfully, is far too polite to comment on my panicked out-of-my-musical-depth facial expression.

Anyway, he’s got an app to show off.

Songs Music Publishing’s Matt Pincus talks Spotify, YouTube, Lorde and digital disruption

Music publishing is changing. It’s the longest established sector of the music industry, but in the last decade it’s also fielded a lot of criticism from within the industry (i.e. labels) concerning publishers’ appetite for supporting new digital innovations.

The thing is, as soon as you group all publishers together – “Publishers are X” or “Publishers do Y” – you’re showing yourself up, not least because there are a growing number of younger, fleeter-of-foot publishers helping to redefine how the sector works, particularly around digital.

Spotify launches artist Spotlight feature with Haim and Lorde

Streaming music service Spotify has been under pressure in recent months to prove its value to artists of all sizes, not just the biggest acts. The company is hoping its new Spotlight feature will contribute to answering some of the criticism.

It’s launching today as “a new home and editorial voice within Spotify for new, exclusive and hand-picked content from both new and established acts”, with Haim and Lorde first to get the treatment.
