Fans of music policy-related hashtags – we know you’re out there! – will enjoy the latest IFPI announcement.

“Today IFPI is calling on EU policymakers to #StayTrueToTheAct,” said the global labels body, as the creative industries launched their latest lobbying effort over AI regulation.

In this case, the regulation already exists: The AI Act, which was passed in the European Union in early 2024.

However, the IFPI is warning that the implementation standard for the act – governing how individual EU countries put it into practice – “is being brought to a level so low that it would undermine the Act’s goals; contravene EU law; [and] ignore the intention of the EU legislator.”

Global collecting societies body Cisac is also on the march over this: its president, ABBA star Björn Ulvaeus, led a delegation of creators to Brussels this week to step up the pressure on politicians.

“We must never be seduced by the false idea that, in the headlong rush to the new AI world, creators’ interests must be cast aside,” said Ulvaeus in a speech.

“The vision has to be a win-win for creators and the tech industry. That can only happen with legislation that truly and effectively safeguards creators.”
