Pitbull invests in Echelon Fitness and gets his own channel
Fitness tech firm Echelon made the headlines last September after reports that it was launching a Peloton-rivalling ‘Prime Bike’ with Amazon, only for Amazon to point out that it was “not an Amazon product or related to Amazon Prime”. More positively, the company signed a deal in November with MediaNet to license music for its service.
Now it’s working with one musician in particular: Pitbull. In fact, he’s investing in the company; writing an ‘anthem’ for its service; launching his own ‘Ride with Pitbull’ channel that uses his music; getting a co-branded ‘Pitbull Bike’ and merchandise; and promoting the company on his next tour.
His investment follows a recent Echelon funding round involving Goldman Sachs. The deal is part of a bigger picture of fitness-tech and music partnerships, from Peloton’s ‘Artist Series’ workouts to the similar ‘Artist Spotlight’ classes launched recently by Apple in its Fitness+ service.
Pitbull signs LiveXLive deal for paid livestreams and vodcast
Pitbull is the latest artist looking to do more with livestreaming and video content, and he’s found a partner to help.
He’s working with US firm LiveXLive in a “multi-year revenue-share content partnership” that will see Pitbull play a series of pay-per-view livestream concerts, while also launching a video podcast (or ‘vodcast’). The latter will be distributed through PodcastOne, the podcasting network that LiveXLive recently bought.
The first livestreamed concert will be on 12 September, as part of a run of four weekly events for which tickets will cost $9.99 a pop from LiveXLive’s site and apps. Tickets won’t be the only revenues either.

Lead: summers for the music industry have traditionally meant festivals, but this year’s “summer of sport” spells out huge opportunities for music to get involved – and all beyond the standard tie-in album or sync licensing deal. Radio 1 hits 1m YouTube subscribers as Pitbull and Courney Love ink web-video deals
YouTube is huge for discovering and listening to music, as you’re well aware, but over the last couple of years, we’ve been trying to cover the other aspects of Google’s video service: the emerging ecosystem of multi-channel networks (MCNs), YouTube stars (‘YouTubers’) and new formats for web video driven by the above.
As time has gone on we’ve also seen more activity from what you might think of as traditional music figures and companies, from artists using their YouTube channels for much more than official videos, to the likes of Universal Music and the BPI getting into the MCN and original-channels space.
