Corridos is one of the most traditional music genres, going back through centuries of Mexican storytelling. But it’s now also a thoroughly-modern trend thanks to its streaming growth.
A new report from Chartmetric and Duetti has more details on that, hailing corridos as “the third fastest-growing genre in the world by superstar growth rate” with almost all of that growth “driven by independent artists”.
“Corridos is estimated to account for roughly 3.0% of global streams. By that measure, it is still a niche genre, but that number has doubled from 1.5% in 2020 in a streaming market that itself has grown substantially over the same period,” noted the report.
Artists including Chino Pacas, Xavi [pictured] and Gabito Ballesteros are among the ‘superstars’ (according to Chartmetric’s success-buckets methodology) of corridos and its corridos tumbados sub-genre.
“Only 7.2% of artists in the corridos universe are affiliated with a label,” added the report, although it pointed out that at the superstar level, 93.3% of artists are “non-indie”. You can read more on the data here.
