Behind-the-scenes (and sometimes out-in-the-open) debates about whether AI-generated tracks should earn streaming royalties continue, with the latest frontier being India.
Medianama reported on music company Saregama’s latest earnings call, and its MD Vikram Mehra’s views on the issue.
“All music labels globally and in India are working very closely with the leading three global streaming platforms, making it clear that when content is distributed across labels, no value should be assigned to content generated purely by AI,” he said.
“We are hopeful that platforms and IP owners will come to a reasonable agreement whereby the royalty money or the content pool money will be distributed only to genuine IP and not AI-generated slop.”
Mehra did tell analysts that Saregama is open to licensing discussions with AI-music companies for its catalogue though. “At the right time, we will also engage commercially with many of these people…”
