Last year, a UK parliamentary report on grassroots music venues recommended a ‘fan-led review’ of live and electronic music, modelled along the lines of a similar initiative for football. At the time, the British government knocked the idea on the head, saying it wanted to focus on an already-announced ticketing consultation instead.
However, now the Culture, Media and Sport Committee that made the original recommendation has announced plans to launch the fan-led review after all. It will be chaired by politician Lord Brennan, who you may remember from his days as Kevin Brennan MP – trying to launch a streaming-reform bill and also doing some policy work on AI and music.
The CMS committee’s chair Dame Caroline Dinenage announced the review plans yesterday at a SXSW London panel. “It would help protect the live music ecosystem and give these vital cultural spaces a real chance to survive and thrive,” she said.
