Lyrics are at the centre of music publishers’ copyright lawsuit against AI giant Anthropic, but now one of the most prominent companies in the lyrics-tech space is playing a more positive role with AI.

Musixmatch has announced “AI innovation deals” with the publishing arms of all three major labels. Co-president Rio Caraeff announced the news on-stage at our Music Ally Publishing Summit this week.

The agreements involve more than 15m works which Musixmatch will use to build “new analytical and non-generative AI services” – the ‘non-generative’ being the key phrase there.

“Our long-standing partnerships with rights owners enable us to confidently build new services that will properly compensate songwriters while delivering value to music publishers and all who recognise the power of a song to move culture and provide meaning to our world,” said Musixmatch CEO Massimo Ciociola.

Further details on what exactly these new services look like will follow in due course.
